As electric golf carts become the mainstream transportation solution for golf courses, residential communities, luxury villas, scenic spots and resort hotels worldwide, battery selection has become the core factor determining vehicle performance, service life and overall operating cost. In the global electric golf cart market in 2026, lead-acid batteries and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries remain the two most mainstream power solutions, catering to different usage scenarios and customer budgets.
1.Traditional lead-acid batteries have long dominated the entry-level electric golf cart market due to their cost advantages. With stable basic performance and low initial procurement cost, they are highly suitable for private families and low-frequency users. Standard lead-acid batteries support stable daily short-distance travel and meet the basic driving needs of conventional golf carts. However, they have obvious limitations in long-term use. The service life of lead-acid batteries is limited to 300 to 500 charge cycles, requiring replacement every 2 to 4 years. In addition, lead-acid batteries require regular daily maintenance, including cleaning terminals and checking electrolyte levels. They are prone to power attenuation under low power status, resulting in weakened climbing power and reduced cruising range in the later stage of power consumption.

Compared with lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries are 60% to 70% lighter in the same capacity configuration. The lightweight design effectively reduces the body load, optimizes acceleration performance and climbing ability, and maintains stable power output even at low battery levels.
3.In terms of daily operation and maintenance, lithium batteries achieve zero maintenance, eliminating regular watering and cleaning work. They support fast charging and deep discharge without damage, greatly improving the utilization efficiency of golf carts. For commercial scenarios such as scenic spot sightseeing cars, hotel shuttle cars and golf course rental vehicles with high-frequency and all-day operation, lithium batteries effectively reduce equipment downtime and battery replacement costs, bringing higher long-term return on investment.
From the perspective of comprehensive cost performance, the two battery types have their own advantages. Lead-acid batteries are friendly to users with limited budget and low-frequency use, with low one-time investment and sufficient performance for daily light use. Lithium batteries have a higher upfront cost, but they offset the initial price difference through longer service life, zero maintenance cost and stable performance, which is more cost-effective for long-term commercial operation and high-frequency use.
Industry analysts pointed out that with the upgrading of global low-carbon travel standards and the improvement of user demand for vehicle durability, lithium batteries will further increase their market share in the electric golf cart industry in the next few years. Meanwhile, lead-acid batteries will still maintain stable market demand in the entry-level civilian market due to their high cost performance.
For global buyers, the most reasonable selection standard is to match the battery type according to actual usage frequency, application scenario and long-term operating budget. Low-frequency family daily travel can choose cost-effective lead-acid battery models; high-frequency commercial operation and long-term fixed-scenario use are more recommended to upgrade to lithium battery configurations to achieve stable operation and lower comprehensive operating costs.
